In una società in cui si cerca sempre più di far valere i diritti delle donne, lo sport si sta adeguando? Numeri alla mano, in particolar modo gli sport di squadra rimangono prettamente maschili. Calcio, Rugby, basket, baseball, cricket, pallanuoto, hockey ecc. sia per numero di utenze che di visibilità, hanno una predominanza assoluta della categoria maschile. La pallavolo può considerarsi un’eccezione dato che riesce a mantenere un livello di uguaglianza, ma esiste uno sport di squadra prevalentemente femminile? Si, e si tratta del roller derby. Nato nel 1935 negli USA dall’imprenditore Leo Selzer, questo sport si afferma principalmente negli anni 60’ dove raggiunge un seguito di più di trentamila persone, periodo in cui si tenta la diffusione anche in Europa, ma senza successo. Il roller derby è uno sport di contatto che si gioca su dei pattini a rotelle su una pista ellittica, denominata track, in cui si affrontano squadre da 14 giocatrici, di cui a turno ne scendono 5 in campo. La partita “bout” è suddivisa in due tempi (“period”) da 30 minuti ciascuno, suddivisi a loro volta dalle “jam” (riprese) della durata massima di 2 minuti. I ruoli sono 2: blocker e jammer. Questi ultimi devono riuscire ad oltrepassare il gruppo di blocker, che hanno il compito di aiutare il proprio jammer ed ostacolare quello avversario. Vince chi riesce ad oltrepassare più volte il “muro” avversario. Il roller derby, considerato sport di nicchia, non ha mai partecipato a nessuna edizione dei giochi olimpici, ma ha le sue federazioni nazionali e internazionali con i rispettivi campionati. L’ultimo mondiale si è svolto in Inghilterra nel 2018, con vittoria degli USA, seguita sul podio da Canada e Australia.
