In occasione della giornata internazionale contro le mafie, il 21 marzo, ricordiamo alcune delle tragiche morti che hanno segnato le cronache del nostro paese. [A cura di Francesco Maddaluno]
È il 6 gennaio 1980. Piersanti Mattarella, fratello del presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella, viene assassinato brutalmente davanti la sua abitazione, mentre era in macchina con la moglie, i figli e la suocera. Il mandante dell’esecuzione è Cosa Nostra, in seguito al suo lavoro ed ai contrasti con Vito Ciancimino, referente politico dei Corleone.
È il 3 settembre 1982. Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, valoroso generale dei carabinieri e prefetto, è in auto insieme alla moglie Emanuela Carraro. Stava percorrendo Via Carini a Palermo, quando una BMW lo affianca: alla guida Antonino Madonia e Calogero Ganci. I due fanno fuoco con un kalashnikov AK-47. Il suo agente di scorta viene affiancato da una moto, guidata da Pino Greco. Muore anche lui. Spariscono le carte che Della Chiesa aveva con sé a Palermo circa il sequestro di Aldo Moro.
È il 23 settembre 1985. Il giornalista Giancarlo Siani viene assassinato all’età di 26 anni. Il suo corpo viene completamente massacrato con numerosi colpi di pistola. I camorristi lo lasciano in auto in piazza Leonardo, al Vomero. Giancarlo si era occupato di denunciare il sistema di collusioni, degli affari dei boss e dei colletti bianchi negli appalti pubblici. Aveva raccolto materiali importanti per pubblicare un libro.
È il 21 settembre 1990. Il giudice Rosario Livatino, appena 38enne, viene inseguito sulla strada statale SS640, che porta da Agrigento a Caltanissetta. La sua auto viene speronata, e lui si ferisce alla spalla. Cerca disperatamente di scappare fuggendo in dei campi, ma viene raggiunto e sparato in faccia. Aveva rifiutato la scorta: voleva proteggere altre vite, anche a costo della sua.
È il 23 maggio 1992. Giovanni Falcone, magistrato simbolo della lotta contro le mafie, è in un auto blindata sull’autostrada che collega l’aeroporto di Punta Raisi a Palermo. Improvvisamente 5 quintali di tritolo distruggono completamente cento metri di asfalto, facendo saltare in aria Falcone e la sua scorta. È un attacco infimo e diretto della Mafia ad uno dei più grandi esponenti della magistratura italiana.
È il 19 luglio 1992. Il magistrato Paolo Borsellino, che era andato a trovare la madre in via Mariano d’Amelio (Palermo), in piena città, è protagonista di un secondo vile attacco. Un altro boato, altre morti. È la sconfitta dello Stato Italiano. È la sconfitta di un intero popolo. La famiglia Borsellino rifiuta categoricamente i funerali di stato: quella non doveva essere un’occasione per dar luogo all’ennesima squallida sfilata politica dei parlamentari. Il presidente Scalfaro viene trascinato fuori dalla Cattedrale di Palermo: l’Italia è in profonda protesta.
È il 15 settembre 1993. Il sacerdote Pino Puglisi, da sempre schierato contro la mentalità mafiosa, compie 56 anni. Poco prima delle undici di sera, però, in piazza Anita Garibaldi, a Palermo, viene freddato davanti al portone di casa, dopo esser sceso dalla sua auto. Le sue ultime parole sono “Me l’aspettavo”. Sul suo volto si stampa un tragico sorriso. Muore, così, un altro grande uomo.
È il 19 marzo 1994. Il prete Giuseppe Diana, che aveva soltanto 35 anni, viene sparato in testa: mandante la Camorra napoletana, che aveva definito come “una forma di terrorismo” e che aveva denunciato con decisione. Viene ucciso mentre preparava la messa a Casal di Principe, nella sua sacrestia. Papa Giovanni Paolo II pronuncia un messaggio di cordoglio durante l’Angelus. L’Italia è nuovamente in ginocchio.
