Conosciuta per le diverse apparizioni in film di diverso genere, il castello Mentmore
nasce come una casa di campagna inglese del XIX secolo per la famiglia Rothschild,
situata nel Buckinghamshire in Gran Bretagna. La proprietà, in stile elisabettiano, fu
concepittà e progettata dal banchiere e collezionista di belle arti il barone Mayer de
Rothschild e fu venduta all’asta nel 1977 da Sotheby’s. La casa padronale si ispirava
agli interni del Rinascimento italiano ed era arredata con lussuosi mobili in stile
francese ricchi di dorature della fine del XVII secolo. Mentmore divenne il quartier
generale dell’organizzazione benefica educativa di Maharishi Mahesh Yogi , la
Fondazione Maharishi , nel 1978. [29] Dal 1997 anche il Natural Law Party affittò
delle stanze lì. [29] L’edificio fu messo in vendita nel 1997. Acquistata nel 1999
dall’uomo d’affari e immobiliarista britannico Simon Halabi, la proprietà doveva
essere, secondo i suoi progetti, trasformata in un hotel di lusso con 171 suite. Il
divieto di costruire un ampliamento che includesse camere per gli ospiti, sale
conferenze e una spa XXL ha costretto l’uomo d’affari a interrompere i lavori. Le
gravi difficoltà economiche dell’impero finanziario di Halabi, dovute al crollo del
mercato immobiliare, hanno bloccato il progetto e la sua completa ristrutturazione.
Da allora nulla è stato fatto, e la villa è stata definita “abbandonata”, “ lasciata a
marcire” e in “stato di decadimento” in un rapporto del 2022. La casa, come
spiegato in precedenza, è apparsa in moltissimi film tra cui cui: Brazil (1985),
Slipstream (1989), Incognito (1997), Eyes Wide Shut (1999), Quills (2000), The
Mummy Returns (2001), Ali G Indahouse (2002), Johnny English (2003) e Infinite
(2021). Mentmore Park è stata utilizzata anche come “il castello” di Batman. Infatti
quest’ultimo proprio per la sua somiglianza all’opulenta tenuta, raffigurata nei
fumetti DC Comics come residenza personale di Bruce Wayne, è stata usata proprio
nei film della trilogia del Cavaliere oscuro del regista Christopher Nolan. L’edificio,
che ha subito un incendio nel film Batman Begins del 2005, è stato ricostruito nel
film successivo “Il cavaliere oscuro” del 2008. Purtroppo tuttora la casa necessita di
lavori urgenti sul tetto e sui camini. Si teme che le intemperie possano penetrare
negli interni, considerati tra i migliori esempi di design e artigianato vittoriano in
Gran Bretagna. Historic England (precedentemente English Heritage ) ha inserito le
Mentmore Towers nel registro “A rischio “, elencandole in “cattive” condizioni con
“rischio immediato di ulteriore rapido deterioramento o perdita di tessuto”,
spiegando che “il tetto dell’ala di servizio è in molto cattive condizioni e il
deterioramento della casa principale sta accelerando con aree di ingresso di acqua
nella sala principale e nelle sale di ricevimento adiacenti”. Ancora però nessuna
soluzione concordata nonostante un piano di restauro
