Probabilmente tutte e tre le caratteristiche sono importanti. Ma un dato è certo: i cartoni
animati appassionano grandi e piccini. Ma come vengono realizzati?

cominciato a diventare una possibilità reale: con la scoperta della “persistenza visiva”, appunto,
gli innumerevoli tentativi di animazione hanno cominciato a dare i primi importanti risultati. Per
ottenere durante la proiezione un movimento fluido e verosimile vengono realizzati 24 disegni
per ogni secondo. Possono essere anche meno, a seconda del tipo di scena e di movimento, ma
mai meno di 6. Un film della durata di 5 minuti richiede dunque tra i duemila e i settemila
disegni. Gli animatori più esperti realizzano soltanto i momenti chiave di una scena (di solito 3 o
4, tra cui certamente quello iniziale e quello finale), tra i quali vengono introdotti, a
completamento dei primi, i disegni intermedi. Sono realizzati da disegnatori meno bravi, detti
“novellini” o “intercalatori”, e servono soprattutto per rendere più fluido il movimento. Una
volta intervenuti i tecnici degli effetti speciali, incaricati di creare e animare fumo, pioggia,
ombre e lampi, si riprende tutto con una macchina verticale, puntata su un piano dove
vengono piazzati i fogli trasparenti. Un fotogramma alla volta.
TECNICHE MODERNE

produzione di film d’animazione. Una via di mezzo sono i cosiddetti film a tecnica mista. Il

convertite in immagini digitali alle quali vengono aggiunte illustrazioni a 3 dimensioni realizzate

prima e vera rivoluzione nel mondo dell’animazione che risale al 1995 con il lungometraggio
Toy Story. Fino ad allora l’animazione 3D era servita solo da complemento alle altre tecniche:
venivano animati in 3D solo alcuni elementi all’interno di un cartoon. Toy Story è invece il primo
film realizzato interamente in CGI (computer generated imagery). È un successo seguito a ruota
da A Bug’s life e Z la formica. L’animazione tradizionale accusa il colpo: il pubblico segue
numeroso le nuove produzioni. Arrivano sugli schermi successi come Shrek, L’era glaciale e
Monsters & Co. Il successo è dovuto alla tecnologia? «Nessuna tecnologia potrà mai
trasformare una cattiva storia in una buona storia. Né una tecnologia, per quanto stupefacente,
può intrattenere un pubblico per più di cinque minuti senza una storia affascinante», spiega
Steve Jobs, il fondatore della Pixar che ha prodotto Toy Story, Monster & Co., Alla ricerca di
Nemo e Gli incredibili. E qui ritorniamo alla domanda fatta prima “Ma come funziona
l’animazione 3D costruita con i computer?” La tecnica è completamente basata sull’utilizzo dei
computer e quindi attraverso la CGI : gli animatori non disegnano né colorano le singole scene,
come nell’animazione tradizionale. I personaggi del cartone animato e gli sfondi vengono creati
al computer e da questo sono animati grazie a speciali programmi che simulano il movimento.
Il lavoro degli animatori è quindi più simile a quello dei burattinai. Muovono i personaggi, gli
cambiano espressione ed è poi il computer a generare le immagini di ogni singolo fotogramma
del film. Questa tecnica si presta poi a dare l’illusione delle tre dimensioni ed è più facile per gli
animatori “muovere la telecamera” nella scena, movendo l’inquadratura e cambiando la
prospettiva dello spettatore. L’animazione computerizzata garantisce la possibilità di alterare e
modificare l’immagine costantemente. I film più famosi sono stati sviluppati con programmi di
modellazione sviluppati apposta, utilizzando potentissimi computer. Ma in molti casi sono stati
utilizzati software già in commercio. E l’animazione 3D si può sperimentare anche su scala
ridotta: esistono programma di animazione economici che funzionano su pc non
particolarmente potenti. Una volta realizzata l’animazione, è possibile salvarla su disco fisso in
un formato video.
ALTRE TECNICHE
Per un film come Galline in fuga, il discorso è un po’ differente: la tecnica con cui è stato
realizzato è sempre tridimensionale, ma non prevede l’uso del computer, se non per fasi
brevissime della produzione. Questo tipo di animazione è chiamata “stop-motion”. I personaggi
sono modellati a mano con diversi materiali (in questo caso plastilina e silicone) e modificati
leggermente per 24 volte in ogni secondo di ripresa (come avviene per i cartoni animati
tradizionali). Gli “attori” di plastilina possono anche essere sostenuti da una resistente
armatura che permette di muoverli. Come si può intuire, la realizzazione di un cartoon a stop
motion è lunga e laboriosa, forse più di quella CGI. Tutto consiste, infatti, nel filmare i modelli in
diverse posizioni e poi montare i diversi fotogrammi alla giusta velocità. Per questo motivo i
lungometraggi realizzati con questa tecnica sono molto rari e, come possiamo vedere, sempre
meno presenti nelle sale cinematografiche proprio per la loro difficoltà ad essere realizzati.
